The retrial of Seçil Erzan continued in the case publicly known as the “high-yield fund” fraud case. The detained defendant Erzan attended the hearing at the Istanbul 29th High Criminal Court via SEGBİS following the reversal decision by the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice. Lawyers for the parties were also present at the hearing.
In the opinion submitted between sessions, the prosecution requested that Erzan be sentenced for “qualified fraud” against 3 individuals, and for “fraud” and “forgery of private documents” against 27 others, including Arda Turan, Mert Zeydanlı, Selçuk İnan, Fernando Muslera, and Buse Terim.
The prosecution requested a prison sentence ranging from 56 years and 6 months to 211 years and 9 months for Erzan. Prison sentences at varying rates were also requested for the 5 other defendants in the case.
Erzan had previously been tried on allegations of defrauding more than 30 people, including well-known football players, by convincing them to invest money in a fund claimed to be high-yield and reliable; the court of first instance had sentenced her to 102 years and 4 months in prison and a judicial fine of 753 thousand 880 Turkish Lira.
The 22nd Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice overturned the verdict on the grounds that the information regarding the merged files was not sufficiently included in the initial ruling and that certain procedural rules were not applied, sending the file back to the court for retrial.
The court granted the parties time to submit their statements regarding the prosecution's opinion and adjourned the hearing.
