5 employees rescued in bank hostage crisis in İzmir, suspect in custody
In the Karabağlar district of İzmir, a suspect who entered a bank branch and took 5 bank employees hostage using a security guard's weapon has been taken into custody following an operation by special operations and negotiation teams. The hostages were rescued unharmed, and 2 Deputy Chief Public Prosecutors and 2 Public Prosecutors have been assigned to the incident.
The incident occurred around 16:30 at a bank branch located on İnönü Street in the Karabağlar district. According to information obtained, an individual identified as C.A., who was reported to have previously received psychiatric treatment, seized the weapon belonging to a private security guard after entering the bank. The suspect, having taken the weapon, held 5 employees inside the bank hostage.
Mother's attempt to persuade and special operations intervention
Upon notification, numerous police, negotiator, and special operations teams were dispatched to the scene. Security forces took extensive security measures around the bank and the surrounding area, closing the street to traffic and pedestrians. During the negotiation efforts, the suspect's mother was brought to the scene in an attempt to persuade him.
As a result of the sensitive and meticulous work carried out by the negotiators and special operations units, the 5 bank employees held hostage were rescued safely. The suspect, C.A., was neutralized by the teams and taken into custody.
Statement from the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office: 4 prosecutors assigned
Following the incident, a statement from the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office indicated that the investigation is being conducted in a multi-faceted manner, stating, "On September 9, 2026, at approximately 16:30, an individual named C.A. arrived at a bank branch located on İnönü Street in the Karabağlar district of İzmir, took the weapon belonging to a private security guard, and held 5 employees inside the bank hostage. As a result of the work carried out by negotiation and special operations units, the 5 bank employees held hostage were rescued safely, and the suspect was taken into custody. An investigation has been immediately launched by our İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident; 2 Deputy Chief Public Prosecutors and 2 Public Prosecutors have been assigned to ensure the investigation is conducted effectively and in a coordinated manner."
