CHP analysis from Korkut Boratav: It was in power in the second half of the 1970s with a left-leaning, class-based platform

The mentor of mentors, Korkut Boratav, made significant remarks on the 100th anniversary of the Republic. Speaking to BirGün, Boratav made noteworthy assessments regarding the CHP.

Boratav stated that the CHP was in power in the second half of the 1970s with a left-leaning and class-based platform.

"THE POLITICAL PENDULUM SWUNG TO THE RIGHT ONCE AGAIN"

Stating that Turkey as a whole shifted to the left in the 1970s, Boratav said, "The 1980 coup and the 1982 Constitution prevented this major transformation. The political pendulum swung to the right once again."

"THE CHP HAS BROKEN AWAY FROM ITS KEMALIST LINE"

Boratav continued his remarks as follows:

"The trend initiated by the September 12 coup has continued uninterrupted, reaching an Islamist fascism. We can also list the determining factors that support this perspective: The CHP, which represented the parliamentary left, was first fragmented; when it reintegrated, it broke away from the class-based platform and the enlightenment/Kemalist line of the 1970s. It transformed into a liberal party without a left wing. The extra-parliamentary, revolutionary, socialist left became the primary target of the September 12 coup; it was dismantled and scattered. It could not reach the widespread, organized power of the previous period again and remained ineffective. It also lost the 'magnet' effect that had pulled the CHP to the left in the 1970s."
