MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli has made new assessments regarding his party’s “100 Provinces, 1000 Districts” project. Bahçeli argued that Turkey’s administrative structure needs to be reorganized due to population growth, urbanization, and the need for access to public services.
Speaking to Türkgün newspaper, Bahçeli said that they envision the establishment of 19 new provinces and 78 new districts with the project prepared by the MHP. Bahçeli stated that the regulation would contribute to the more effective functioning of central and local governments following the Presidential Government System.
Currently, there are 81 provinces and 922 districts in Turkey. If the model proposed by the MHP is implemented, the number of provinces will rise to 100 and the number of districts to 1000. However, no definitive list has been shared regarding which districts will be granted provincial status or which settlements will be made into districts.
FINAL DECISION LIES WITH THE TBMM
Bahçeli stated that criteria such as population, economic development potential, geographical location, access to public services, and strategic importance will be taken into account when determining the locations to be granted provincial status. He emphasized that the final decision will be made by the TBMM.
"Undoubtedly, the districts to be made provinces will ultimately be determined by the TBMM, based on a consensus reached by the relevant institutions of our state in accordance with objective criteria established among our districts that possess the potential to become provinces."

The MHP leader also said that his party could bring a legislative proposal regarding the districts and towns it deems appropriate to the parliamentary agenda in the future. According to Bahçeli, the project aims to provide public services more quickly and efficiently.
There is currently no legislative proposal submitted to the TBMM regarding the regulation. Therefore, how the process will proceed, whether the MHP will prepare a proposal, and whether the potential regulation will enter the parliamentary calendar will become clear in the coming period.
