In the first stage of the trial held at the Istanbul Anadolu 7th Criminal Court of First Instance, İmamoğlu was sentenced to 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison, along with a political ban. The case, which has been ongoing at the Court of Appeal for the last two years, could soon be concluded and moved to the Court of Cassation.

CHP DECIDES ON EMERGENCY MEETING

MEETING TOMORROW AT 13.30

The CHP will meet tomorrow at 13.30 to discuss İmamoğlu's trial. The meeting will be attended by prominent party figures Gül Çiftçi, Burhanettin Bulut, Ensar Aytekin, Gökhan Zeybek, and Gökhan Günaydın. Additionally, Ekrem İmamoğlu's lawyers will share the latest developments regarding the case with party members.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A lawsuit was filed against IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on charges of insulting Supreme Election Council (YSK) members following his response to Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu after the March 31, 2019 elections were canceled by the YSK.

İmamoğlu had responded to a journalist's question regarding a speech by Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu, in which Soylu had said without naming him, “I am telling the fool who goes to Europe and complains about Turkey. This nation will make you pay the price for this.” İmamoğlu had said, “When we look at those who canceled the election on March 31 and where we stand in the eyes of the world and Europe, and at what happened and what ended, those who canceled the election on March 31 are indeed fools. Let him focus on that first.” Following this, Sadi Güven, the then-head of the YSK, filed a complaint alleging that he and the serving board members had been insulted.

Upon the complaint, a lawsuit was filed against İmamoğlu, and he was sentenced to 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison, along with a political ban.
