Aydın Ünal, a former speechwriter for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and a columnist for Yeni Şafak, made assessments regarding the recent tension between Turkey and Azerbaijan and the election process.
In his column, Ünal recalled that international arrest warrants have been issued for 7 people from Turkey due to their comments, and that an entry ban to Azerbaijan has been imposed on 31 people. He argued that these events cannot be explained solely by the headscarf ban debate and the reactions to it.
Stating that the Azerbaijani side is escalating the tension while Turkey is "taking the high road" in the process, Ünal used the expression, "It is extremely clear that the tension escalated by the Azerbaijani side and downplayed by Turkey does not stem from the headscarf ban and the reactions given to it."
At the end of his article, Ünal also issued a warning regarding Erdoğan's approaching election process. Stating that Erdoğan is heading toward his "easiest election," Ünal nevertheless assessed that risks are increasing as the election draws near.
Ünal stated, "President Erdoğan is frankly heading toward his easiest election, walking in a rose garden without thorns. But as the election approaches, the risks have also started to increase." He also claimed that after Aliyev's statements, a headscarf ban began to be implemented in schools in Azerbaijan.
