Another journalist assassinated in Mexico: Shot dead during breakfast
A reporter in Mexico's Oaxaca state lost his life in an armed attack targeting him at a restaurant in the morning hours. A woman was also injured in the incident.
In a tragic incident in the town of San Pablo Etla near the capital of Oaxaca, journalist Francisco Alejandro Leyva was targeted by gunmen while having breakfast at a restaurant. Leyva lost his life at the scene of the attack, while a woman who was inside the restaurant at the time was also injured.
Oaxaca State Governor Salomon Jara strongly condemned the murder on social media. Jara announced that he had instructed the state prosecutor's office to conduct the investigation in coordination with federal authorities responsible for crimes against freedom of expression.
Leyva, reported to be the seventh journalist killed in Mexico in 2026, highlights once again the alarming scale of violence against members of the press. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) continues to draw attention to the high risks in the country.
Shortly before he was killed, journalist Leyva had shared criticisms on Facebook regarding the organization of the Guelaguetza Festival, which was attended by local officials. While the judicial investigation into the incident is ongoing, the motive for the attack has not yet been clarified.
