Journalist İsmail Arı described the conditions in his ward in a letter sent from Sincan Prison, where he is being held. Arı stated that 62 people are staying in a ward designed for 28, and that 34 people are sleeping on the floor because there are no beds for them.
In his letter, Arı reported that eight people are staying in four-person rooms, and when that is not enough, some inmates lay out mattresses in the common area of the ward. Describing the overcrowding in the ward, he used the expression, "We stretch our legs under the bunk beds to be able to sleep because it is impossible to fit into the ward's rooms otherwise."
Stating that it has become almost impossible to move while sleeping, Arı wrote that they even have to get up just to turn over in bed. Noting that the room he stays in is 4.80 meters long and 2.10 meters wide, Arı stated that there is a small window and two lockers in the room.
Arı also made an assessment regarding his imprisonment in his letter. Saying, "So why am I here? Just because I did journalism..." Arı brought the conditions in the prison to the attention of the public.
