Statement from the Ministry of National Defense on Iraq: 'Cooperation in defense and security will continue with determination'
The Ministry of National Defense announced that coordination between Turkey and Iraq in the areas of border security, counter-terrorism, and defense is ongoing.
The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) has announced that defense and security cooperation between Turkey and Iraq continues with determination. In a statement made following the ministry's weekly press briefing, it was emphasized that contacts between the two countries are strengthening strategic relations.
The statement noted that following the Iraqi Prime Minister's visit to Turkey and his meetings with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, joint mechanisms in the field of security continue to be operational. The MSB noted that coordination on border security and counter-terrorism topics is ongoing.
The ministry recalled that in previous meetings held between Turkey and Iraq, an agreement was reached to increase cooperation in the fields of border security, counter-terrorism, and the defense industry. It was stated that in addition to contacts in the fields of economy and energy, security mechanisms are also working effectively.
In the MSB statement, it was noted that Turkey-Iraq relations are important not only for regional security but also for the security and welfare of Iraqi Turkmens. The ministry assessed that the cooperation developed between the two countries has provided significant gains in the fight against terrorism.
Recent data regarding border security were also shared. Accordingly, 468 people attempting to cross the border illegally were apprehended in the last week. It was reported that 4 members of terrorist organizations were among those apprehended.
During the same period, the illegal crossing of 1,102 people was prevented. The MSB announced that since January 1, 6,953 people attempting illegal crossings have been apprehended, and 43,878 people have been prevented from crossing the border.
The ministry also stated in its assessment regarding developments in the Middle East that Israel continues its attacks on Lebanon and Palestine, violating ceasefire provisions.
