280 domestic satellites will be a miracle in disasters!
The project by astrophysicist Umut Yıldız, who returned from NASA, will carry Turkey to the top in space.
Astrophysicist Umut Yıldız, who returned to Turkey after leaving NASA, is participating in a project where the launch of 280 domestic and national satellites is expected to provide significant contributions to disaster and emergency management through advanced communication and observation services. After taking office as Deputy General Manager at Plan-S Satellite and Space Technologies, Umut Yıldız stated in his remarks that they are focusing on satellite constellations in Turkey and are working to realize "Internet of Things" (IoT) communication and earth observation services with this new space technology.
Emphasizing that satellite constellation technology is still new worldwide, Yıldız stated that Turkey is taking rapid steps in this field. Reporting that the 5 satellites sent into space by Plan-S to date have passed successful tests and are collecting data, Yıldız said they aim to transition to commercial use by sending 12 more satellites this year. He noted that as the number of satellites increases, the revisit time for the same location will shorten, allowing for more effective results in disaster management.
Furthermore, he mentioned that in addition to communication satellites, 24 imaging satellites are also planned, and through these satellites, real-time images of a region can be obtained. Highlighting the importance of satellite technology in disasters and emergencies, Yıldız drew attention to the necessity of real-time imagery in particular.
Umut Yıldız stated that the project does not only have a commercial purpose, but they also aim to contribute to world science and society, and that interesting projects such as a small Moon Project could be developed in the future. Desiring the development of the space program in Turkey, Yıldız called for an increase in the number of science centers to boost the interest of young people and children in space.
Finally, expressing his desire to contribute to Turkey's space program, Umut Yıldız stated that with the new regulation by the Council of Higher Education, he wishes to teach at universities flexibly as someone working in the industry.
