Google loses lawsuit: To pay $5 billion in damages

According to a report by the BBC, the California District Court announced that a settlement has been reached in the lawsuit filed against Google for allegedly violating the privacy of its users.

Chief Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers announced that Google has reached a settlement with the plaintiffs to pay $5 billion in damages.

The lawsuit was filed in 2020 by the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner, alleging that Google cookies continued to track users' internet browsing activities even after they had enabled Incognito mode in Chrome.

On the other hand, Google Spokesperson Jose Castaneda had denied the allegations in question, stating that they would defend themselves vigorously through legal channels.

Castaneda had argued that Incognito mode in Chrome offers the option to browse the internet without information being saved to the browser or device, but that websites can still collect information about browsing activities each time a new incognito tab is opened.

Judge Rogers had rejected Google's motion to dismiss the case last year.

At the beginning of December, Google also agreed to pay $700 million in an antitrust lawsuit filed against its Android app store, the Google Play Store, over accusations that it suppressed competition.
