In his statement at the signing ceremony, Mourinho said, "I made a mistake by going to Fenerbahçe, but I gave everything I had until the very last day."
In a statement released by the Portuguese club, it was announced that a 2-year agreement, with an option for an additional year, has been reached with the 62-year-old experienced manager.
Jose Mourinho made statements about his time at Fenerbahçe and his goals at Benfica during the signing ceremony held for him.
Stating that going to Fenerbahçe was a mistake for him, Mourinho said the following:
"I am very happy to be at Benfica. As a representative of the Benfica fans, no club I have managed has motivated me as much as being the manager of Benfica.
Benfica's DNA is to win. We cannot win every time, but we cannot lose like we did two days ago! This is not Benfica! Benfica is the team that played with one man down against Fenerbahçe for 30 minutes and still achieved a positive result in Istanbul despite being a player short. This is the Benfica I see myself in! I am the manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Things were easy at Fenerbahçe. I wanted to play with a back four, but the club signed 5 players after I left. That was not possible while I was there. You have to adapt to the current situation, and I do adapt. I praised Benfica's squad, and I will praise it again. I thought Benfica did a great job during the transfer window, and it was a team I liked very much. I am not a very good example when it comes to fair play, but I am better."
"MANAGING BENFICA MEANS RETURNING TO MY OWN LEVEL"
It was not easy for me to congratulate Benfica and Bruno Lage. Benfica has good players, they had a good manager, but that is life.
I made a mistake by going to Fenerbahçe, but I gave everything I had until the very last day. Managing Benfica means returning to my own level."
