National Team shifts into 5th gear in the second half: A resounding victory in Bulgaria

In the third match of Group E of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers, Turkey faced Bulgaria away from home. The National Team won the match by a wide margin, scoring 5 goals in the second half alone.

National Team shifts into 5th gear in the second half: A resounding victory in Bulgaria

In the match played at the Vasil Levski National Stadium, the National Team came very close to scoring in the 8th minute. Orkun Kökçü's shot from the right diagonal of the penalty area hit the crossbar and went out.

The Crescent-Stars found the goal in the 11th minute. Arda Güler, who played a one-two with Hakan Çalhanoğlu, met the ball in the penalty area. Despite goalkeeper Mitov's intervention, Arda's shot found the net, and Turkey took a 1-0 lead.

Bulgaria's response to this goal was not delayed. In the 13th minute, Kirilov's shot from Despodov's cross deflected off Zeki Çelik and into the net, bringing the score to 1-1.

The first half of the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

WE SCORED 5 GOALS IN THE SECOND HALF

Starting the second half with significant pressure, the Crescent-Stars took the lead in the 49th minute. A Bulgarian defender, Victor Popov, who was moving toward the ball alongside Kenan Yıldız, made an own goal, and Turkey took a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes later, Turkey found another goal. Kenan Yıldız, who met the ball in the penalty area following Arda Güler's pass, sent the ball into the net with his shot: 3-1.

Receiving the pass from Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Kenan Yıldız quickly entered the penalty area, shook off his opponent, and scored his second and the National Team's fourth goal with an immediate shot.

Continuing their pressure, the national team extended the lead to 4 in the 65th minute. From a corner kick taken by Arda Güler, Zeki Çelik headed the ball in at the near post to make the score 5-1.

Oğuz Aydın, who intercepted the ball following a major error by the Bulgarian defense, crossed it to the back post where İrfan Can Kahveci tapped it in to set the final score in the 90+3rd minute: 6-1.

There were no more goals in the remainder of the match, and Turkey left the pitch with a 6-1 victory, securing a critical win on the road to the World Cup.

CLIMBED BACK TO 2ND PLACE IN THE GROUP

With this victory, the National Team increased its points to 6 and climbed to 2nd place in the group, while Bulgaria remained without a point after 3 matches and sits in 4th place.

The national team will host Georgia in Kocaeli on Tuesday, October 14, for their 4th match in the group, while Bulgaria will face Spain away.
