Competing as the number 4 seed in the singles draw, Sönmez faced local player Elvina Kalieva in the second round of the WTA 250 category tournament. In the match played on hard court, the national athlete was defeated 2-1 by her opponent with set scores of 6-3, 5-7, and 5-7.
Kalieva, ranked 132nd in the world, drew attention with her comeback, particularly in the final set. Despite falling behind 4-1 in the last set, the American tennis player won the set 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
