14-month prison sentence for person who killed 76 cats

At the Changwon District Court, the trial of an unnamed man in his 20s, who was accused of violating South Korea's Animal Protection Act by killing 76 cats, was heard.

In the case, which involved one of the most horrific instances of animal cruelty in the country in recent years, the individual claimed that he began to harbor a deep hatred for the animals after some cats scratched his car.

The court found the individual guilty of torturing and killing cats that he had collected from the streets and adopted for free from online sites between December 2022 and September 2023.

The court sentenced the individual, who committed the same crime repeatedly in a planned and cruel manner, to 14 months in prison.

Meanwhile, the individual has appealed the court's decision.

Borami Seo, Director of Humane Society International/Korea, noted in a statement regarding the matter that the sentence reflects society's growing concern for animal welfare and its reaction against such senseless cruelty.
