The investigation into the death of 8-month pregnant Maria Potosi in Colombia has become a major national issue. The young woman's body, with her hands and feet bound, was discovered in the Rio Melendez River.
Examinations revealed that Potosi had multiple stab wounds on her body and that the baby in her womb had been removed by cutting. It is not yet known where the baby is or whether the infant is alive.
According to local media reports, Potosi was last seen alive on July 16. Security camera footage captured the moment the young woman got on a motorcycle with an unidentified woman. There was no news of Potosi for four days following these images.
Forensic examinations conducted on the body found in the river on July 20 led to the case being treated as a murder investigation. Authorities are continuing their search for the person Potosi was last seen with and the fate of the baby.
'REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE CAPTURE OF PERPETRATORS'
Following the incident, Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder and the police announced a reward of 200 million Colombian pesos for information that would lead to the capture of the perpetrator or perpetrators. After the reward announcement, a person named Carlos Rincon contacted the police.
Rincon stated that the woman on the motorcycle in the security footage was his ex-girlfriend. He also alleged that his former partner had previously faked pregnancy twice and claimed to have miscarried once.
These statements raised the possibility that the suspect may have committed the murder with the intention of obtaining a baby. The woman, who was taken into custody for questioning, gave contradictory statements regarding where she had left Potosi. Her ex-boyfriend also confirmed that the suspect did not come home on the night of the murder.
The female suspect was released after her initial interrogation. Police teams are continuing their investigation into the death of Maria Potosi and the fate of the baby.
