Approximately 2,000 ships and 20,000 sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz
International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated that approximately 2,000 ships and 20,000 sailors are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz due to the war in the Middle East.
As attacks between the US, Israel, and Iran continue, ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has yet to return to normal. International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz poses a "serious challenge" for the global maritime industry, noting, "20,000 sailors are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, and approximately 2,000 ships are unable to sail.
The longer the ships remain there, the longer the crew is exposed to stress and fatigue. Furthermore, the supplies required for the ships to continue their operations are also dwindling," he said.
Stating that insurance companies are refusing to cover losses and costs, Dominguez pointed out that the vast majority of companies are either terminating contracts or demanding high premiums.
Dominguez stated that thanks to humanitarian aid provided by countries around the strait, there is currently no humanitarian crisis on the ships, and noted that the IMO is pressuring for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to allow the ships to exit the region.
Dominguez emphasized that US President Donald Trump's plan to provide escort for ships in the strait is not sustainable, as there is no guarantee that commercial vessels will not be targeted and that innocent sailors will not lose their lives.
