Death toll rises to 28 in 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Japan

The death toll from the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture is increasing. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the earthquake has risen to 28.

In his statement regarding the loss of life, Kihara said, "This figure also includes deaths that are considered to be related to the earthquake and are currently under investigation." Search and rescue and relief efforts are ongoing in damaged structures across the region.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also shared a post on her social media account, thanking the countries that sent messages of condolence and solidarity. Takaichi stated, "I would also like to express my sincerest gratitude for the offers of support we have received so far from many countries and international organizations. The government of Japan is working with all its might to carry out rescue operations and provide aid to the regions affected by the disaster."

It was reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was Kumamoto Prefecture, and a temporary tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas along the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas following the tremor. An explosion occurred at the Aeon Mall shopping center shortly after the earthquake, and a chimney collapsed at a paper mill owned by Nippon Paper Industries.

Japan Self-Defense Forces personnel have also been deployed to support efforts in the disaster zone. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned local residents that earthquakes of similar magnitude could occur within the next week.
