First Russian visit to Syria following the Assad era

Following the collapse of the 61-year-old Baath regime in Syria, led by the jihadist HTS, Russia is conducting its first official visit.

A delegation, including Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, has landed in Damascus.

According to the Russian news agency RIA, the delegation conducting the visit includes Alexander Lavrentyev, the Russian President's Special Envoy for Syria, and Mikhail Bogdanov, Putin's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister.

Jihadist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overthrew Bashar al-Assad, leading to the dissolution of the 61-year-old Baath regime. Bashar al-Assad had traveled to Moscow with his family, and Russia had granted asylum to him and his family.
