First statement from Bolsonaro, who fled to the US after losing the election: 'I will lead the opposition from here'

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who was defeated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round of the presidential election held in Brazil on October 25, made a statement from the US after leaving his country. Claiming that there were irregularities in the elections, Bolsonaro said, "I will lead the Brazilian opposition from here."

Bolsonaro, who is reported to be the subject of investigations into corruption and money laundering, argued that the judicial system in Brazil has become "politicized." Asserting that his departure from the country was not an escape, Bolsonaro said that he had also brought his family to the US.

"I did not flee Brazil; I left for the good of Brazil. I call on the international community: Do not allow what is happening in Brazil to be normalized. I will lead the opposition from here."

In his statement, Bolsonaro thanked US President Donald Trump and the American people for accepting him. Stating that he watched the election results "in horror" on Sunday night, Bolsonaro described the process against him as a "witch hunt conducted through political initiative."

JUDICIAL PROCESS AND REACTIONS

It had been alleged that a decision was made to seize Bolsonaro's passport in Brazil, but that he left the country on a secret flight before the decision could be implemented. Reports in the Brazilian press had claimed that Bolsonaro first went to Argentina and then to Ecuador.

Lula da Silva had described it as "shameful" that Bolsonaro, who lost the election, left the country despite a travel ban. According to information in the Brazilian press, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) is conducting an investigation into Bolsonaro regarding allegations of illegal financing of a biographical film about his father's life titled "Dark Horse."

The newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo also wrote that Bolsonaro was a suspect in a separate money laundering investigation allegedly linked to his close friend and lawyer Willer Tomaz. Trump, in his previous statement, had announced that he was skeptical of the election results in Brazil and that he had allowed Bolsonaro and his family to enter the US.
