Macron calls emergency security meeting in France

French President Emmanuel Macron has summoned the country's leading political figures to an extraordinary meeting at the Presidential Palace, citing the "rapid deterioration of the international situation in recent days."

According to a statement from the Presidency, the meeting addressed the potential consequences of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East on France's security and energy supply. In addition to political party representatives, the meeting was attended by military officials, intelligence chiefs, national security authorities, and senior officials responsible for energy.

It was reported that Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was also present at the meeting. Representatives from parties represented in Parliament were scheduled to receive a comprehensive briefing on the security situation.

CLASSIFIED INFORMATION ALSO ON THE AGENDA

According to government sources speaking to the French press, one of the notable aspects of the meeting is that "classified information held only by the President" will be shared with political leaders. In this context, it was reported that the heads of domestic and foreign intelligence agencies, as well as military intelligence officials, were also present at the meeting.

Speaking before the meeting, Marine Tondelier, leader of the Ecologists, stated that she expected to receive information regarding developments in the Middle East and around the Strait of Hormuz in particular. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure stated that the process should be managed without panic, adding, "We must not be governed by fear."

The meeting in France comes at a time when security concerns are rising in Europe. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned, based on intelligence, that Russia is planning "hybrid attacks" using drones and missiles against NATO countries supporting Ukraine.

Tusk stated that scenarios for the coming months could include "serious incidents," adding that Poles must be "mentally prepared for difficult tests." It is also reported that Germany plans to expand its brigade structure in Lithuania to strengthen NATO's military presence on its eastern flank.

The impact of security risks in Eastern Europe and tensions in the Middle East on energy markets is also reflected in France's domestic agenda, particularly through fuel prices. For this reason, it is noted that the meeting covers not only foreign policy but also energy supply and public security.
