Multiple explosion sounds were heard in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, after air defense systems were activated. The Saudi-led Arab Coalition announced that 2 ballistic missiles fired toward Riyadh by the Ansar Allah Movement, also known as the Houthis in Yemen, were intercepted and destroyed.
The Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defense reported in statements on its X account that danger warnings were issued via the National Emergency Early Warning Platform for the provinces of Al-Kharj and Najran, as well as Riyadh. The statements did not share details regarding the cause of the warning or the precautions citizens should take.
Eyewitnesses reported that security alerts were sent to their mobile phones, and shortly after, air defense systems were activated and sounds of explosions were heard. The General Directorate of Civil Defense later announced that the danger had passed for Riyadh, Al-Kharj, and Najran.
Arab Coalition Spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki also stated in a post on his social media account that 2 ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis were destroyed by air defense systems. Al-Maliki did not provide information on whether there were any casualties or damage resulting from the attempted attack.
While clashes between government forces and the Houthis in Yemen have intensified recently, the Houthis occasionally target Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. The Riyadh administration, for its part, announces that these attacks are intercepted by air defense systems.
