Storm Boris hits Italy: More than 1,000 people evacuated

Severe storms and heavy rainfall in Italy have caused flooding in the northern Emilia-Romagna region, leading to the evacuation of more than a thousand people from their homes. The government has declared a state of emergency and dispatched personnel to the region.

Storm Boris, which caused loss of life and property in Central Europe, has begun to show its effects in Emilia-Romagna, a region in northern Italy.

According to a report by the Italian news agency ANSA, the rainfall that began yesterday and continued throughout the night caused flooding in some rivers and streams passing through the region, such as the Senio, Marzeno, and Lamone.

It was reported that the cities most affected by the adverse weather conditions in the region were Bologna, Cesena, Forli, Ravenna, Faenza, and Rimini.

It was noted that the center of the town of Castel Bolognese was flooded as a result of the overflow of the Senio River near the city of Ravenna.

In addition to the 800 people evacuated around Ravenna, it was stated that 165 people around Bologna were forced to leave their homes and spent the night in shelters provided by local authorities.

It was reported that the number of people in distress who were evacuated across the region has exceeded 1,000.

WARNING FROM AUTHORITIES: 'STAY AWAY FROM BASEMENTS'

It was stated that Civil Defense and Fire Department teams are continuing rescue efforts for those trapped in their homes, and that mayors in the region have warned the public, especially those living near rivers, to stay away from ground floors and basements and to remain on upper floors if possible.

It was noted that there have been no casualties in the region so far.

Due to the adverse weather conditions, education has been suspended today in schools in Bologna, Cesena, Forli, Rimini, and Ravenna, and transportation has been halted on 5 railway lines in the region.

The Prime Minister's Civil Protection Department has also issued a 'red' alert for the Emilia-Romagna region.

At least 15 people lost their lives in the floods that occurred in the same region in May 2023.
