Voters in the US will head to the polls for the Congressional midterm elections on November 3. In the elections, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the 100-seat Senate will be up for renewal.
Poll averages across the country indicate that Democrats appear to have the advantage in both chambers. However, the picture shows that the results in states and districts where the race is neck-and-neck could determine the majority balance in Congress.
CRITICAL STATES ARE DECISIVE
According to the current projection by Real Clear Politics, which compiles general and state-based polls, Democrats are expected to win 47 seats and Republicans 45 in the Senate. It is stated that the race is neck-and-neck in eight states. Seven of these seats are said to lean Republican, while one leans Democratic.
For Republicans to reach the critical threshold for a majority in the Senate, it appears they must win at least five of the closely contested seats. In the event of a 50-50 tie in the Senate, the tie-breaking vote cast by US Vice President JD Vance in his capacity as President of the Senate could provide the Republicans with a majority.
In the House of Representatives, 218 seats are required for a majority. According to the table on RCP, it is projected that Democrats will win 227 seats and Republicans 180. It is noted that the margin between the two parties is narrow for the remaining 28 seats.
In the current Congressional arithmetic, Republicans hold 53 seats and Democrats hold 45 in the Senate. Two independent senators act with the Democrats on many issues. In the House of Representatives, Republicans hold 218 seats and Democrats hold 214; there is one independent member, and two seats are vacant.
For this reason, the November 3 elections will directly affect not only the distribution of seats but also the administration's capacity to pass its legislative agenda through Congress. Although Democrats appear ahead in the polls, the intensity of the close races indicates that the outcome on election night could be shaped state by state.
