US and Saudi Arabia sign nuclear cooperation agreement

It was reported that US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement, known as a "123 Agreement," and an accompanying mutual security measures agreement.

In a written statement from the US Department of Energy, it was stated that these agreements will advance various economic and strategic goals, including the prevention of nuclear proliferation, and will form the legal foundation for a multi-billion dollar partnership that will span decades.

The statement noted, "The 123 Agreement will provide American companies with significant access to the Saudi nuclear energy program, benefiting American industry, workers, and supply chains, while also helping to meet Saudi Arabia's energy needs." It was emphasized that the signed agreements will support the US position and regional security by maintaining high standards for nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation, while strengthening the US competitive advantage in civil nuclear technology.

"Will deepen strategic partnership"

The statement, which highlighted that the US has regained its competitive advantage in the civil nuclear market under the leadership of President Donald Trump, expressed that the partnership established with Saudi Arabia will increase US nuclear technology exports, provide high-paying jobs and long-term economic growth, strengthen the US energy and national security position, reinforce global nuclear non-proliferation efforts, and deepen the strategic partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, it was noted that the agreements will be submitted to the US Congress for review.

"US nuclear renaissance has begun"

US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright pointed to the importance of the signed agreements, stating, "These agreements reflect the shared commitment of both nations to strengthening US-Saudi commercial ties, providing prosperity at home, and security to our allies abroad." Wright added, "Rest assured, these agreements are based on the world's best nuclear technology and the scientists who design it all right here in the US, while also maintaining the highest standards for nuclear safety and non-proliferation. Thanks to President Trump, the 'US nuclear renaissance' has begun, and this will provide long-term benefits to the American and Saudi people."
