US: Nothing will be on the table until the Strait of Hormuz is opened
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, regarding whether sanctions on Iran will be lifted during the negotiation process, stated, "Nothing will be on the table until we see the Strait of Hormuz opened, and until the Iranians agree to hand over their enriched uranium and accept that they cannot possess nuclear weapons."
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made a statement regarding the negotiation process with Iran at a press conference held at the White House.
Stating that frequent discussions are being held between the parties, Bessent said that US President Donald Trump clearly defined his red lines on this topic during a cabinet meeting.
Bessent said that Iran must dispose of its enriched uranium resources and that the Tehran administration cannot continue its efforts to acquire nuclear weapons. Bessent said, "Maritime passage in the Strait of Hormuz must be free. The sea must be free and open, as it was in the past."
Referring to US President Donald Trump, Bessent said, "He will not make a bad deal. He will make a great deal for the American people."
"Nothing will be on the table until the Strait of Hormuz is opened"
In response to a question about whether the lifting of sanctions on Iran would be on the table during the negotiation process, the Treasury Secretary said, "This is a multi-faceted agreement; nothing will be on the table until we see the Strait of Hormuz opened, and until the Iranians agree to hand over their enriched uranium and accept that they cannot possess nuclear weapons."
Bessent argued that Trump has achieved something no previous US administration has managed, saying, "We have convinced the Iranians to discuss their nuclear program and perhaps even commit to not having a nuclear program. This has never happened before."
The US Secretary said that there was no regime change in the country following the attacks on Iran, but that the administration had nevertheless changed. Bessent said, "There was no regime change in Iran, but we changed the regime."
