What is the latest situation in Congress following the US elections?

In the elections held in the US on November 5, Republicans secured a majority in the House of Representatives, the other chamber of Congress, following their success in the Senate.

According to unofficial data published by the Associated Press (AP), Republicans reached 53 seats in the Senate and secured a majority in the House of Representatives by reaching 218 seats.

Thus, in the elections where Republican Donald Trump won the presidential race, the Republican Party achieved a significant success by securing a majority in both chambers of Congress.

With these results, Trump, along with the Republicans who hold the majority in Congress, will have a strong say in the country's administration until the midterm congressional elections to be held in 2026.

In the 2016 elections, where Trump won the presidential race, Republicans had also reached a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

SENATE ELECTIONS

In the US presidential elections on November 5, voters cast their ballots for one-third (34 seats) of the 100-seat Senate and all 435 seats of the House of Representatives.

Congressional elections are quite important in shaping US domestic and foreign policy, as which party controls which chamber of Congress significantly determines the US president's scope of action.

Senators are elected for 6-year terms, and one-third of the Senate is renewed every two years.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ELECTIONS

In the congressional elections held simultaneously with the US presidential election, all seats in the House of Representatives were contested.

Members of the 435-seat House of Representatives serve 2-year terms.

The number of representatives each state has in the House of Representatives is determined by the population density of the electoral districts in those states.
