Orientation is a psychological tendency that expresses individuals' attitudes toward specific objects or subjects. In politics, this concept allows parties to accurately understand voter behavior and shape their campaign strategies accordingly. By measuring voter orientations, political parties can better understand the expectations and needs of various segments of society and develop their policies in this direction.
So, how do political parties measure voter orientation?
Political parties resort to orientation measurement to determine voters' attitudes toward social and economic issues. This measurement can be conducted through various methods such as surveys, focus groups, and social media analysis. Measured orientations may include topics such as the perception of the economic situation, views on immigration policies, or sensitivity toward environmental protection.
Let's say a political party wants to develop its economic policies. First, it might commission a survey to understand voters' orientations regarding the current economic situation. The survey includes questions to learn how voters feel about issues such as unemployment, taxation, and social security. The data obtained helps the party shape its economic policies according to the real needs and expectations of the voters.
THE DYNAMIC STRUCTURE OF ORIENTATIONS AND STRATEGIC USE
On the other hand, although orientations may seem permanent, they can change as a result of specific events and information campaigns. Political parties adjust their campaign messages and policy statements by taking these potential changes in voter orientations into account. For example, a party that identifies a high level of sensitivity toward the environment among young voters might try to influence this voter base by highlighting its environmental policies. This effort means, for instance, measuring young voter behavior as "continuous" or "instantaneous." The most suitable channels for this are social media platforms. It is possible to measure voter behavior instantly on social media. While these measurements may not provide definitive results in identifying orientations during times when the agenda changes very frequently, they can, as the name suggests, provide an idea about the direction in which voter attitudes are evolving.
Orientation measurement enables political parties to understand the true attitudes and expectations of voters, allowing them to develop more effective and target-oriented political strategies. This guides parties not only during campaign periods but also in policy-making processes. Therefore, the application of correct orientation measurement techniques is one of the keys to political success.
