Ahmet Türk explains: Are the AKP and DEM Party in talks?
DEM Party Mardin Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate Ahmet Türk made statements regarding the current agenda. Addressing the withdrawal of Başak Demirtaş, wife of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, from the Istanbul mayoral race, Türk also confirmed that there are communications between the DEM Party and the AKP.
DEM Party Mardin Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate Ahmet Türk made statements regarding the current agenda.
Responding to questions from Abdulselam Akıncı of Rûdaw TV, Türk answered the question, "Why did the DEM Party change its decision regarding Başak Demirtaş?" as follows:
"I WANTED HER TO BE THE CANDIDATE"
"Rumors that Başak Demirtaş would be nominated in Istanbul had created excitement among DEM Party voters and had become one of the most discussed topics on the election agenda. Regarding the question of why the DEM Party changed its decision about Başak Demirtaş, Ahmet Türk said, 'You have to ask the Party Headquarters about this. I don't know why they made such a decision either. Personally, I wanted Ms. Başak to be the candidate in Istanbul, but this is the party's decision and only the party can provide an answer.'"
STATEMENT ON TRUSTEES
When asked if they were worried about another trustee being appointed if they were elected, Türk replied:
"Honestly, we don't know. You cannot trust this government. It is unclear what they will do, but they have appointed trustees twice, and I don't think they will do it a third time. Because the trustees did nothing for the people. The trustees closed the doors of the municipalities to the public. Today, to go to the municipality, you have to get permission from the police first. The municipalities are working for those in power and their circles. Actually, there is a lot to tell, but I don't want to say these things now. Look, just a few days ago, they distributed the municipality's money to three of the AKP-run districts. They see that they will lose the municipality. They don't want us to do anything economically in the metropolitan municipality. They are making dirty calculations. They have tied many of the municipality's activities to the governor's office. They want to bring the municipality under their own control."
WAS A PROMISE GIVEN THAT NO TRUSTEE WOULD BE APPOINTED?
Stating that "no promise was given to us that a trustee would not be appointed again," Türk said, "There is no agreement or contract between us. However, we see this: the AKP cannot continue with this policy; they are losing day by day. They are forced to review and change their policies. If they continue this politics by being hostile to the Kurdish people, they will lose. Therefore, we hope for the emergence of a new policy. In truth, the Kurdish people should be embraced. If you look at the Kurdish people with hostility, Turkey can neither reach democracy nor develop economically. It also loses its influence in the Middle East and internationally day by day."
"ERDOĞAN HAS THAT POWER"
"Dialogue is needed for a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue. We want to do this with everyone. Our cause, our demand is peace. Our desire is the brotherhood of peoples," said Türk. "But we say this: the CHP cannot do it. Why? Because it cannot convince the deep state. If Erdoğan wants to—and today all powers, institutions, and organizations are in his hands—if he wants to, he can convince them. They can solve the issue. Even if the CHP wanted to, it could not convince the entire state, the deep state. That is why I made this assessment. I did not say only Erdoğan can solve it or will solve it; I said he has that power. But today, it is also Erdoğan who oppresses the Kurds the most. He holds the authority until 2028," he said.
CONFIRMED TALKS WITH THE AKP
When asked, "Do you have talks with the AK Party?" Ahmet Türk said, "We do not have official talks, but we do talk to names from the Parliament, and they also express their discomfort with the policy their party is currently following. But we do not have official talks with Erdoğan." While not naming names, Türk replied, "I cannot give names, that would not be right."
MHP CONDITION FOR TALKS WITH ERDOĞAN
Stating that it is not possible for them to come together with President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan today, Türk said, "As long as they have an alliance with the MHP, this will not come to the agenda. However, if they break away from the MHP, they will inevitably have to follow a new path. (The alliance with the MHP) has started to become a heavy burden for them as well. The Turkish people are also uncomfortable with this policy."
