Being brought to Turkey: 100 kg of smuggled gold and 1.5 million euros seized

The Libyan Internal Security Agency reported that it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle 100 kg (220 lb) of gold and 1.5 million euros during a security check for an international flight at Misrata International Airport.

In a report confirmed on its Facebook page, the Security Agency stated that the gold bars were found in three suitcases, and the cash was found in one suitcase.

The agency noted that the suitcases were spotted during a security check for a flight bound for Turkey.

Misrata is a port city located approximately 200 km (125 miles) east of the capital, Tripoli. The agency added that "those responsible for these suitcases have been arrested."

In May, the Tripoli-based public prosecutor's office announced that it had ordered the arrest of the director general of customs and other officials for smuggling approximately 26 thousand kg of gold at Misrata International Airport.
