Following Özer's arrest, a trustee was appointed to the Esenyurt Municipality.

The Ministry of Interior announced that Deputy Governor of Istanbul Can Aksoy has been appointed as the Acting Mayor of Esenyurt by the Istanbul Governorship.

STATEMENT FROM MANSUR YAVAŞ ON AHMET ÖZER

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş has broken his silence regarding Özer's arrest.

In a statement on his social media account, Yavaş asked, "It is stated that the allegations were identified by going back 5-10 years. Why was it waited until this date?"

Drawing attention to reports in pro-government media that 'a trustee has been appointed to Esenyurt Municipality' before the arrest warrant for Özer was even issued, Yavaş stated, "The fact that this claim has come true shows that the political dimension of the matter has reached an undeniable state."

Yavaş's statement is as follows:

1. First of all, it is not in accordance with the law for an elected mayor to be detained by raiding his home at 5:30 in the morning when it was possible to summon him by invitation. It is merely an indication that there is a desire to discredit him.

2. It is stated in the arrest request memorandum of the Public Prosecutor's Office, which was published on the internet in the evening, that the events and allegations mentioned were identified by going back 5-10 years. Why was it waited until this date?

3. No one has the freedom to commit crimes. While it is possible for a Mayor to be tried and punished in accordance with the law if they have committed a crime, making an arrest when there is no possibility of evidence being destroyed, when the person has a fixed residence, and when there is a procedure for trial without arrest for such reasons, is contrary to procedure and the law.

4. In recent days, while on one hand attempts are being made to grant legal status to a terrorist organization leader (despite the fact that Court of Cassation precedents require very concrete and serious evidence for membership in a terrorist organization), the arrest of Ahmet Özer on vague and abstract accusations is concerning for the sake of democracy and the rule of law.

5. The fact that there were claims on some websites during the investigation, before the arrest was even made, that a trustee would be appointed to Esenyurt Municipality, and that this claim has come true, shows that the political dimension of the matter has reached an undeniable state.
