BTK statement on fake e-signature scandal: 'Strong measures have been taken'

In a written statement regarding cases of fake e-signatures, the BTK stated: “The judicial process concerning the fake e-signature cases that have recently come to the public's attention was initiated following a complaint by a university and technical findings made by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority's (BTK) National Cyber Incident Response Center (USOM).

Comprehensive investigations into the fake e-signature (QES – Qualified Electronic Certificate) cases were converted into a judicial investigation by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office as of August 2024.

The 35 fake e-signatures identified by the BTK were immediately canceled, followed by the cancellation of 9 additional fake e-signatures in subsequent efforts, and stronger measures have been taken by increasing security mechanisms against forgery.

In order to raise public awareness, it has been ensured that an SMS containing the ESHS title is sent to all mobile numbers registered to the Turkish ID numbers of all QES holders.

The relevant SMS informed citizens that secure electronic signatures generated in their name can be queried via the 'Qualified Electronic Certificate Inquiry' service on the E-Government portal at the address https://turkiye.gov.tr/btv-elektronik-imza-sertifikalari-sorgulama. Our institution continues its fight against digital forgery with determination,” the statement read.
