CHP Chair Özgür Özel visited several detainees and convicts at the Bakırköy Women's Closed Penal Institution.
Speaking to reporters after the visit, Özel stated that he met with Gezi Park trial convicts Çiğdem Mater and Mine Özerden, as well as detainee Esila Ayık, at the prison.
Explaining that he carried out this visit alongside CHP Women's Branch Chair Asu Kaya, Deputy Chair for Youth Policies Sevgi Kılıç, and Bakırköy Mayor Ayşegül Ovalıoğlu, Özel said, "They are keeping our friends inside who fought to ensure that Gezi ended peacefully, who struggled to prevent conflict and to ensure that no one was harmed."
Regarding Esila Ayık's health issues, Özel stated, "Some of her ailments have been reflected in the public eye. In our meetings with both the prison administration and herself, she indicated that she is uncomfortable with some of the news being slightly exaggerated in the public sphere and the resulting public outcry."
Stating that Ayık's family is in a poor economic situation, Özel said, "We expect this friend of ours, who is ill and for whom every passing day is difficult, to be released as soon as possible in the coming period. Of course, she will be released."
