CHP leader Özgür Özel faces 'insult' investigation: Minister Tunç announces

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced via his social media account that an investigation had been opened against Özel, with the following statement:

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the insulting remarks made by the CHP leader directed at our President.

These words, which overstep all bounds and fall outside the limits of respect, constitute a clear attack on the will that represents 86 million of our citizens.

Politics is conducted within the boundaries of decency and morality. The inappropriate language used by the CHP leader has gone beyond a mere matter of tone; it has reached a level that exceeds political civility.

Our nation will never allow those who engage in smear campaigns and slander to go unchecked, just as it has not done so until now.

WHAT DID ÖZGÜR ÖZEL SAY?

A further investigation has been launched against CHP leader Özgür Özel over statements he made following his visits to Marmara Prison in Silivri.

In his statement in Silivri, Özel used the following words:

"Tayyip Erdoğan, who couldn't beat the CHP candidate, is playing word games. You were kicked out of Aydın on 31 March — kicked and beaten. We defeated you a third and fourth time. If taking Aydın means either locking someone up or telling them to join my party, what can I say to you. Is that sportsmanship? Next time I'll take Aydın again. Shame on you."
