Collapse occurs at marble quarry: Footage of the accident emerges
Two workers have lost their lives in a landslide at a marble quarry on Marmara Island in Balıkesir, while search and rescue efforts continue to locate another worker.
A landslide occurred for reasons yet to be determined at a marble quarry in the Saraylar neighborhood of Balıkesir's Marmara Island.
Ahmet Özmen and Mustafa Dak, workers at the marble mine owned by Ediz Öztürk, were trapped under marble blocks along with the sliding soil.
TEAMS MOBILIZED
Following the incident, AFAD, fire department, medical, and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the region. As a result of the efforts, the lifeless body of Ahmet Özmen was recovered.
SEARCH EFFORTS CONTINUE
Intensive efforts by the teams are ongoing to rescue the other worker, Mustafa Dak, who remains trapped under the debris. It was learned that the search and rescue operations are continuing under difficult conditions due to the size and weight of the marble blocks.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
Ahmet Akın: 2 PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES
Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Akın stated in a post on his social media account that 2 people lost their lives as a result of a landslide at a marble quarry operating in the Saraylar neighborhood of Marmara Island, Balıkesir.
Mayor Akın's statement is as follows:
“I have learned with great sadness that 2 of our citizens lost their lives as a result of a landslide at a marble quarry operating in the Saraylar neighborhood of Marmara Island. I wish God's mercy upon them and offer my condolences to their families and loved ones.”
