Diyanet sets fitra amount: The figure sparks debate
The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), which frequently makes headlines for its luxury spending, has set the 2025 fitra amount at 180 TL.
The High Board of Religious Affairs of the Presidency of Religious Affairs has announced that the fitra amount, which will be valid from the month of Ramadan in 2025 until the month of Ramadan in 2026, is 180 TL. This figure, set by the Diyanet, which is headed by Ali Erbaş, remained below expectations in an inflationary environment.
38 PERCENT INCREASE
A 38 percent increase was applied this year to the fitra amount, which was 130 TL in 2024. However, even when compared to the official inflation rates announced by TUIK, this increase appears to be insufficient. While the fitra amount is supposed to be determined in a way that covers a person's daily food needs, whether 180 TL will be enough to meet this need has become a subject of debate.
DOES NOT ALIGN WITH THE REALITY OF INFLATION
Fitra represents the food expenses that a person should consume throughout one day. However, considering the rising food prices and the high cost of living, criticisms are mounting that 180 TL will be insufficient to cover daily expenses.
The fact that the Diyanet frequently makes headlines for its luxury spending while keeping the fitra amount low has been met with public backlash.
