DMM issues statement on claims of a collapse in Diyarbakır following Şanlıurfa earthquake

Following the 5.4 magnitude earthquake centered in Şanlıurfa, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, some footage was shared on social media alleging that a ground collapse had occurred in Diyarbakır. While the posts quickly became a trending topic, a statement regarding the matter was issued by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM).

In an announcement on its social media account, the DMM stated that the footage in question does not show a collapse caused by the earthquake. The statement noted that no reports of any earthquake-related collapses had been received by the relevant governorates or AFAD provincial directorates.

The center maintained that the circulating footage belongs to renovation and infrastructure work being carried out in the region. The statement included the following: “The situation seen in the footage has no connection to the earthquake. It is kindly requested that no credence be given to speculative posts aimed at creating a perception of anxiety and panic among the public.”

The footage that spread on social media following the earthquake had caused concern, particularly among citizens living in surrounding provinces. With the DMM's statement, it was emphasized that the claims in the posts have not been verified by official institutions.
