Fines from RTÜK for NOW TV and TELE1!

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), which has become a tool of the AKP government against opposition media, has issued fines once again.

RTÜK Member İlhan Taşcı stated that fines were imposed on NOW TV for its reports on lobster and nepotism, and on TELE1 due to the phrase “palace lackey” used by a guest on a broadcast.

Making a statement on his social media account regarding the fines given to both channels, Taşcı used the following expressions:

"A fine from RTÜK for the lobster report! A 2% administrative fine was decided against NOW TV for violating the privacy of private life, as it reported on the mobile phone images of the correspondence between former Minister of Industry Varank and Bilal Erdoğan regarding AKP MP Şebnem Bursalı’s lobster post. RTÜK punished the report on nepotism, not the nepotism itself! RTÜK also issued a 2% fine to NOW TV for broadcasting mobile phone images showing a Deputy Minister of Justice responding to requests for nepotism in a promotion exam. Furthermore, RTÜK decided on a 2% fine for TELE1 for exceeding the limits of criticism due to the comments made by guest Rıfat Serdaroğlu, who referred to certain politicians as 'palace lackeys.' The decisions were taken by majority vote."
