Former AKP İzmir MP Hüseyin Kocabıyık has been arrested on charges of "insulting the President in a chain manner." According to a report by the Cumhuriyet newspaper, six social media posts and an interview he gave to Cumhuriyet were included as the subject of the accusation in the referral document prepared for the court regarding Kocabıyık.

CRITICISMS EVALUATED AS CRIMINAL

In the file prepared by the prosecutor's office, it was stated that the criticisms Kocabıyık directed at President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu were also evaluated within the scope of the "crime of insult."

Statements Kocabıyık made on his social media account, such as,

"Imagine a ruler who wants to get rid of his rival by having him imprisoned because he fears him,"

and

"Tayyip Erdoğan, was this the future we envisioned? Is this what we struggled for? Is this why we spent years dragging ourselves through courts? You have actually staged a coup against yourself, and you don't even know it,"

were also included in the file as evidence of a crime.

HE WAS EXPELLED FROM THE PARTY LAST YEAR

Following an investigation launched due to statements he made in an interview with the Cumhuriyet newspaper, former AKP member Hüseyin Kocabıyık, who was expelled from the party last year, was charged with "insulting the President." Kocabıyık, who was detained as part of the investigation, was arrested by the court he was brought before.

PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE: "THERE IS A SUSPICION OF FLIGHT"

In the referral document for his arrest, it was stated that Kocabıyık's posts were "of a nature that damages the honor, dignity, and reputation of the President." The document included the statements, "It is assessed that there is strong suspicion of a crime regarding the commission of the crime of publicly insulting the President, and that the crime was committed in a chain manner due to the actions being carried out more than once."

The prosecutor's office also requested his arrest, stating that there was a "suspicion of flight" regarding Kocabıyık.

Hüseyin Kocabıyık, whose arrest was ordered by the court, is expected to be transferred to the Marmara Prison in Silivri, Istanbul, shortly.
