He had killed his grandmother! Bedirhan Şener, son of Abdüllatif Şener, sentenced to life in prison

The court has announced its verdict regarding Bedirhan Şener, the son of former minister Abdüllatif Şener, who shot and killed his grandmother, Leyla Çetiner. Şener was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional homicide against a lineal ascendant." The court applied a 'good conduct' reduction, commuting the sentence to life imprisonment.

SCHIZOPHRENIA DEFENSE

The hearing at the Ankara 1st High Criminal Court was attended by the detained defendant Bedirhan Şener, his family, and his lawyers. While Şener's lawyer argued that a detailed investigation had not been conducted by the Council of Forensic Medicine and that a crime scene reconstruction was necessary, he stated, "It is clear that the client was experiencing a psychotic episode during the incident and was not in his right mind. It is clear that the client was not targeting any specific point. On the day of the incident, the client's mother, Berrin, and the victim went to the apartment door without even ringing the building's doorbell. As soon as the door opened, shots were fired indiscriminately."

Stating that the defendant's mother was also present alongside the victim during the incident, Kızılyar noted that Şener did not fire a single shot at his mother and had no intention to kill. Lawyer Kızılyar requested his client's acquittal, stating that he suffers from schizophrenia.

MY GRANDMOTHER WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE I LOVED MOST IN THE WORLD

Asked for his final statement, defendant Bedirhan Şener defended himself by saying, "My grandmother was one of the people I loved most in the world. When the earthquake happened, she was living in Osmaniye; her house was destroyed. Even though we had many relatives in Ankara, I went and brought my grandmother here myself because I loved her so much. It is out of the question for me to have committed such an act against my grandmother intentionally. The same applies to my mother. I request my acquittal and release."

SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT

After hearing the statements, the court panel announced its verdict, acquitting the defendant of the charges related to his mother, Berrin Şener, on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence.

For the killing of his grandmother, Leyla Çetiner, with a firearm, the court first sentenced Şener to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional homicide against a lineal ascendant." The court then applied the reduction under Article 62 of the Turkish Penal Code due to the defendant's good conduct during the hearings, commuting Şener's sentence to life imprisonment.

Şener was also sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for the crime of "possession of an unlicensed firearm."
