Jeweler's mistake costs 100 thousand liras

The incident occurred around noon on October 18, 2023, at a jewelry store on Gaziler Street in the Alaybey neighborhood of the Şahinbey district. According to reports, a young couple came to the jewelry store with gold earrings, rings, necklaces, and a bracelet in two separate sets to sell them.

The employee who processed the young couple's transaction, Yaşar Karakaş, forgot to tare the scale he placed the gold on, calculating the 190 grams of gold as 250.61 grams and paying out 473,990 TL instead of 373,990 TL. While those moments were reflected on security cameras, the young couple left the workplace after receiving the money.

When the discrepancy was noticed during the evening accounting, Karakaş reviewed the security camera footage and determined that the couple had been overpaid.

Describing those moments, jewelry store employee Yaşar Karakaş said, "Our customer came to sell gold. After processing the gold, we paid about 100,000 TL too much while making the payment. We accidentally gave an extra bundle. It was a bundle consisting of 200 TL banknotes.

So they sold 2 separate sets, which amounted to about 190 grams. It totaled 373,990 TL. Instead of paying 373,990 TL, we made a payment of 473,990 TL due to a calculation error. I didn't realize it," he said.

Stating that such incidents usually happen when they act quickly to avoid inconveniencing customers, Karakaş said, "It's not so much about the minor busyness, but rather our own carelessness.

Because we handle many transactions throughout the day. We are human, after all, in these transactions. Our attention wanders, and things slip past us. It can lead to large amounts. For example, on the day this error occurred, I processed a thousand transactions. Maybe if it had happened to one of them, it would have been a thousand-lira shortage, but it happened to this one. It created a 100,000-lira deficit.

This is also because when you are processing so many transactions, your attention can drift; you are in front of a screen. The positions of the numbers can get mixed up. In a moment of distraction, because our business revolves around money, you aren't a greengrocer where you might give one extra tomato, or a waiter where you might drop and break a glass.

Realizing that too much money had been given, Karakaş found the young couple through security camera recordings and asked citizens who know them to reach out to them.
