Minister announces the date: Social media regulation for under-15s is coming!

Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş announced that the omnibus bill, which also includes social media regulations for children under 15, will be sent to the relevant committee in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) at the end of January.

STATEMENT AFTER CABINET MEETING

Responding to questions from members of the press following the Cabinet Meeting, Göktaş stated that the primary goal of the prepared regulation is to impose greater responsibility on social media platforms.

ACCOUNT BAN FOR UNDER-15S ON THE AGENDA

Minister Göktaş noted that the draft plan includes imposing an obligation on social network providers to not offer services to children under 15 and to prohibit the opening of accounts for this age group. She also conveyed that making effective filtering systems mandatory to protect children from harmful content is among the proposals.

"WE CANNOT REMAIN SPECTATORS TO THIS SITUATION"

Göktaş made the following remarks regarding the issue:

'We must not allow social media platforms to use our children as a commercial commodity. We cannot remain spectators to this situation. We have been working on this issue for 1.5 years. We have conducted studies on this subject with experts, academics, social media platforms, non-governmental organizations, families, and the children themselves. We are referring our omnibus bill draft, which includes the social media regulation for those under 15, to the relevant committee in Parliament at the end of this month.'
