Passenger bus catches fire on Northern Marmara Motorway: 2 dead, 8 injured

A fire broke out after an intercity passenger bus crashed into a barrier on the Northern Marmara Motorway in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul.

2 people lost their lives and 8 people were injured in the incident.

The accident occurred at around 19:10 in the Işıklar neighborhood, Işıklar location.

It was reported that the driver of the passenger bus with license plate 23 AFA 634, traveling from Diyarbakır to Istanbul, lost control of the steering wheel on the road, which was stated to have become slippery due to rain, and the vehicle crashed into the barrier.

The flames that erupted in the bus due to the impact grew in a short time.

Upon notification, fire, health, and police teams were dispatched to the region.

While the fire crews extinguished the fire, it was determined by the health teams that 2 people had lost their lives and 8 people were injured. The injured were taken to hospitals by ambulances after the initial intervention at the scene.

The teams' investigations into the accident and the fire at the scene are ongoing.

Istanbul Governor Gül: "2 of our fellow citizens have passed away, and 8 people have been transported to hospitals with injuries"

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said regarding the fire that broke out in the bus that had an accident on the Northern Marmara Motorway, "Unfortunately, 2 of our fellow citizens have passed away, with a large part of the bus having burned. 8 people were transported to hospitals with injuries. There were 16 passengers in total, and 2 staff members. Our judicial colleagues will follow up on the subsequent processes regarding the cause of the fire, whether there was any deficiency, or if there were tasks that should have been done but were not."

With the intervention of the fire department, it was attempted to be extinguished after about 5-6 minutes, but because the fire spread rapidly, unfortunately, 2 of our fellow citizens passed away with a large part of the bus having burned. 8 people were transported to hospitals with injuries. There were 16 passengers in total, and 2 staff members; 18 people. Therefore, 8 of the 18 people were removed without being affected in any way. 2 of the 10 people passed away, and 8 people were transported to hospitals. Of the 8 people, 1 is in serious condition, 2 are relatively better, and 5 people were affected by smoke. We wish God's mercy upon those who passed away, and we offer our condolences to their relatives. We convey our get-well wishes to our injured fellow citizens.
