Population in Turkey is not renewing: Decline in fertility rate

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has released birth statistics for 2023. According to TUIK data, the number of live births was 958 thousand 408, while fertility remained below the population replacement level of 2.10.

Population in Turkey is not renewing: Decline in fertility rate

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has released birth statistics for 2023. According to TUIK data, the number of live births in 2023 was 958 thousand 408. Of the live-born babies, 51.3% were boys and 48.7% were girls.

FERTILITY RATE HAS DROPPED

The total fertility rate refers to the average number of children a woman can have during her reproductive period, which is the 15-49 age group.

The total fertility rate was 2.38 children in 2001, while it was 1.51 children in 2023. In other words, the average number of children a woman could have during her reproductive period was 1.51 in 2023. This indicates that fertility remained below the population replacement level of 2.10.

HIGHEST PROVINCE: ŞANLIURFA

The province with the highest total fertility rate in 2023 was Şanlıurfa with 3.27 children. This province was followed by Şırnak with 2.72 children and Mardin with 2.40 children.

BARTIN RANKED FIRST!

The province with the lowest total fertility rate was Bartın with 1.13 children. This was followed by Zonguldak and Karabük with 1.14 children, and Kütahya with 1.16 children.

WE ARE FIFTH IN EUROPE

When the total fertility rates of the 27 European Union member countries were examined, it was observed that France had the highest total fertility rate in 2022 with 1.79 children, while Malta had the lowest with 1.08 children. Turkey, with a total fertility rate of 1.63 per thousand in 2022, ranked 5th among European Union member countries.

MATERNAL AGE HAS INCREASED

The average age of mothers who gave birth in 2001 was 26.7, while it was 29.2 in 2023. The average age of mothers who had their first child in 2023 was 27.0.
