Reaction from the Istanbul University Student Council to the diploma cancellation

The Istanbul University Student Council stated that the decision taken is part of anti-democratic practices in universities and released a statement on the matter:

The decision taken today by the Istanbul University Board of Directors regarding Ekrem İmamoğlu clearly reveals the political dimension of the anti-democratic practices carried out by the state in universities through the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and appointed trustees.

Those who do not recognize the students' right to “speech-authority-decision” in universities, and the attacks carried out to usurp our right to organize, pose a threat to everyone who does not align with the political interests of the ruling power.

In universities where students are profiled and freedom of thought and organization is not recognized due to investigations into their political views, we once again see the justification and legitimacy of our “Autonomous-Democratic university struggle.”

Based on the reality demonstrated by the decision taken today in the person of Ekrem İmamoğlu, we call on all our fellow students to be partners in our autonomous-democratic university struggle, and we declare that we will stand against the decision taken.

We will not remain silent in the face of attempts by those who usurp the will of students through appointed trustees to eliminate their political rivals with this decision!
