On December 15, 2023, on a bus heading to Mersin City Hospital, İsmet T., who was learned to be a high school principal in the Tarsus district, and his son A.O.T. (17), beat 77-year-old Ramazan Polat, who had a pacemaker, was partially paralyzed on the right side of his body, and suffered from kidney failure, along with his wife Hamdiye Polat (71).

Sad news has arrived today regarding 77-year-old Ramazan Polat, who was the victim in the incident captured on security cameras.

Polat, who had been in intensive care at Mersin University Hospital for approximately 2 weeks, could not be saved despite medical interventions and passed away.

It was stated that Polat's exact cause of death will be determined following an autopsy, and he will be laid to rest afterward.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The incident occurred on December 15, 2023, on a bus heading to Mersin City Hospital in the central Toroslar district. İsmet T., who was learned to be a high school principal in the Tarsus district, and his son A.O.T. (17), argued with 77-year-old Ramazan Polat, who had a pacemaker, was partially paralyzed on the right side of his body, and suffered from kidney failure, and his wife Hamdiye Polat (71), during which first A.O.T. and then his father attacked the elderly couple.

Following the incident, which was reflected second-by-second on the bus's security camera, school principal İsmet T. was arrested on January 17, 2024, and after the footage of the beating emerged on February 28, 2024, the principal's son A.O.T. was detained again and arrested by the court he was brought before following police procedures.

The Mersin Provincial Directorate of National Education had also reported that, following notification by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident, the aforementioned school principal was suspended as of January 17 and an administrative investigation was initiated.

SCHOOL PRINCIPAL HAD RECEIVED A 3-YEAR SENTENCE

In the subsequent hearing of the case, the school principal İsmet T., one of the detained defendants, was sentenced to 3 years, 1 month, and 15 days in prison, but it was decided to release him considering the time he had spent in detention. The case opened against his son A.O.T. in the 2nd Juvenile Court is still ongoing.
