Statement from Cem Küçük's lawyer: 'The decision is unjust and unlawful; he will be cleared of all charges'
Cem Küçük's lawyer, Merve Uçanok, described the decision as "unjust and unlawful." In a press statement, Uçanok said, "We have full faith that our client is innocent and that, as a result of the final review by judicial authorities, he will both regain his freedom promptly and be cleared of all charges against him."
Following his statement to the prosecutor, Küçük was referred to the criminal judgeship of peace with a request for arrest solely on the charge of "publicly disseminating misleading information." Following the judgeship's interrogation, an arrest warrant was issued for Küçük.
Küçük’s lawyer, Merve Uçanok, stated the following in a press release:
“As is known, our client Cem Küçük was taken into custody on July 30, 2026, on charges of blackmail and publicly disseminating misleading information. He was brought to the Çağlayan Courthouse today to provide his statement. He answered all charges against him and the questions posed by the Prosecutor's Office with clarity and sincerity. During his statement, our client was asked about certain money transfers to his account and the content of his correspondence. He answered all questions sincerely. He presented the reasons for the money transfers to his account, concretely explaining that these were related to his journalism, publishing, and translation activities, or that they stemmed from personal debt relationships.
Although our client was referred to the Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for arrest following his statement to the Prosecutor, it must be importantly noted that the Prosecutor's Office only requested his arrest for the crime of publicly disseminating misleading information. NO ARREST REQUEST WAS MADE FOR THE CRIME OF BLACKMAIL. IN OTHER WORDS, HE WAS RELEASED REGARDING THE BLACKMAIL CHARGE.
Our client answered the questions posed to him at the Criminal Judgeship of Peace where he was brought, but following the judgeship's evaluation, it was decided that our client would be arrested at this stage ONLY FOR THE CRIME OF PUBLICLY DISSEMINATING MISLEADING INFORMATION. The decision in question is unjust and unlawful.
Our client is a member of the press who has accomplished significant work on screens and in newspapers for many years. He has been in the media sector since 2013. He purchased a vehicle with the savings he has accumulated to date. This vehicle is in his wife's use. He resides in a rented home. His wife works as an English teacher at a private school. My client, who leads an extremely modest life with his precious wife and children, has not obtained the slightest unfair gain at any point in his life.
In conclusion, we have full faith that our client is innocent and that, as a result of the final review by judicial authorities, he will both regain his freedom promptly and be cleared of all charges against him.”
