Tensions run high in Esenyurt! Özgür Çelik met with Istanbul Governor Davut Gül

The Esenyurt Democracy Watch, which began following the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer on October 30 and the subsequent appointment of a trustee in his place, continued today. CHP Deputy Chairmen Pınar Uzun and Gamze Taşçıer, Istanbul Deputy Engin Altay, and Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik attended today's vigil.

Following the vigil, the CHP delegation moved to the Esenyurt District Governorate. Özgür Çelik, who met with Istanbul Governor Davut Gül there, answered questions from journalists in front of the district governorate building.

In his statement after the meeting, Özgür Çelik said, "We could not find common ground."

'WE WILL CONTINUE OUR STRUGGLE'

Çelik stated the following:

“Following a phone call from Ankara, the Istanbul Governor came to the Esenyurt District Governorate, and we held a meeting. Our request was as follows: We demand that the blockade in front of the municipality be lifted. We demand that our municipal council members be allowed to enter the CHP group room. We demand that they be allowed to carry out their oversight duties there. We conveyed our demands as the CHP, stating that we also request that our deputies be allowed to come here every morning and visit our council members in the group room.

We held a discussion with the Governor regarding the process within a certain timeframe, with comments and evaluations from all our deputy chairmen and deputies. The Governor will evaluate the process within his own scope. At this moment, we could not find common ground. We could not reach a common understanding regarding the removal of the barricade and the entry of council members into the group room, but the Governor will evaluate it. We will continue our struggle in front of the door.”
