Thodex founder Faruk Fatih Özer laid to rest

Faruk Fatih Özer, the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Thodex, has died by suicide in Tekirdağ F-Type Prison. Özer was laid to rest in the Darıca district of Kocaeli.

Thodex founder Faruk Fatih Özer laid to rest

Faruk Fatih Özer, the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Thodex, was found hanging in his solitary cell at the Tekirdağ F-Type High-Security Closed Penal Institution. The incident occurred on the morning of November 1, 2025. Checks conducted by prison officials suggest that Özer died by suicide. Following forensic examination and autopsy procedures, his body was released to his relatives.

FUNERAL BROUGHT TO HIS VILLAGE

Following the completion of the autopsy, Faruk Fatih Özer's body was brought to the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood in the Darıca district of Kocaeli. After a ceremony held at the Murat Balcı Mosque, he was laid to rest at the Nene Hatun Cemetery.

HE FACED A LENGTHY PRISON SENTENCE

Faruk Fatih Özer, who was accused of defrauding a large number of people through the Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, had fled to Albania in 2021 but was captured in Albania on August 30, 2022, and brought back to Turkey. He was facing a total of 11,190 years and 6 months in prison on charges of establishing and managing an organization, being a member of an organization, qualified fraud, and laundering assets.

DIED AFTER BEING TRANSFERRED TO PRISON

Shortly after being transferred to the Tekirdağ F-Type High-Security Prison, Özer was found hanging in the prison bathroom on the morning of November 1, 2025. Following an investigation by the prison prosecutor, Özer's body was transferred to the morgue of the Tekirdağ İsmail Fehmi Cumalıoğlu City Hospital and subsequently sent to the Council of Forensic Medicine.
