Bizarre incident in Niğde: They kept a mummy at home and tried to sell it for 1 million dollars

A mind-boggling incident occurred in the town of Kemerhisar in the Bor district of Niğde. A group of tradesmen interested in treasure hunting attempted to sell an almost perfectly preserved male mummy they found in a field for 1 million dollars. The incident was uncovered through an operation conducted by the gendarmerie.

CONTACT ESTABLISHED UNDER THE GUISE OF A PROFESSOR

Teams from the Niğde Provincial Gendarmerie Command took action following intelligence regarding historical artifact smuggling. The teams made contact with the suspects through an undercover officer who introduced himself as a "professor specializing in historical artifacts." The information that the suspects were looking for a buyer to sell the mummy they had found ignited the operation.

The background of the incident dates back about 1 year. According to the report by Sabah Newspaper, hairdresser Ruhi Gökmen, tradesman Mehmet Azak, and hairdresser İsmail Erin discovered a mummy with its legs visible at a depth of 1.5-2 meters while searching for treasure in the Kalay Göl area of Kemerhisar. The male mummy, which was removed from the ground, was moved to a house in the Tepe neighborhood that belonged to the grandfather of gallery owner Hakan Gök.

After being hidden inside the house for a while, the mummy was concealed in a septic tank in the garden of the house so as not to attract attention.

''THEY CALLED ME, WE TOOK THE MUMMY TO THE HOUSE''

Gallery owner Hakan Gök, who was arrested after the operation, detailed how he learned about the incident in his statement. Gök stated that about 8-10 months ago, Ruhi Gökmen called him and said, "I will send you a location, will you pick me up from there?" Stating that when he went to the location, he encountered Ruhi Gökmen and İsmail Erin with a mummy lying open on a wooden board, Gök explained the following:

"I asked what it was, and Ruhi told me, 'It's a mummy.' I was stunned. He said to me, 'Let's take the mummy to your small house, we'll pick it up from there in a few days.' We took it to the small house in Söbüçayır registered to my grandfather, locked the door, and they left the key with me."

A PRICE OF 1 MILLION DOLLARS WAS SET

The most striking detail of the incident was the astronomical price set for the mummy. Auto electrician Hacı Oğuz, who was detained during the operation, recounted his negotiations with the buyer of the mummy in his statement. Oğuz said that he sent a video of the mummy to an acquaintance, and upon the other party expressing interest, they asked for "1 million dollars." He stated that the buyer said they could agree on the price after seeing the mummy.

Among the 7 people detained in the investigation, hairdresser İsmail Erin gave the clearest statement. Admitting that he personally conducted the negotiations for the sale of the mummy, Erin said he got involved in this business due to financial difficulties:

"I have an autistic child, and I had credit debts. I wanted to make a profit from this business and take a deep breath."
